What Is Medical Retina?
Medical retina covers diseases of the retina and macula managed mainly with monitoring, medication, intravitreal injections or laser rather than retinal surgery.
Common Retinal Conditions
The field includes age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and macular oedema, retinal vascular occlusions, central serous chorioretinopathy and inflammatory retinal involvement.
Diagnostic Tests
OCT, fundus photography, retinal angiography when indicated, visual acuity and a dilated retinal examination help define disease activity and measure response to treatment.
Treatment Approaches
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include anti-VEGF injections, selected corticosteroid therapy, retinal laser, systemic risk-factor control or observation. Combined treatment may be used when appropriate.
Monitoring and Urgent Symptoms
Many retinal conditions require repeated follow-up. A sudden decrease in vision, new distortion, flashes, a curtain-like shadow or many new floaters requires prompt ophthalmic assessment.
