What Is Corneal Transplantation?
Corneal transplantation replaces diseased or opaque corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue. Depending on the affected layer, the entire cornea or only a selected layer may be replaced.
When Is It Considered?
Indications may include advanced keratoconus, corneal scarring, endothelial failure, selected dystrophies or damage that cannot be adequately managed by other methods.
Types of Keratoplasty
Penetrating keratoplasty replaces the full thickness of the cornea. Lamellar procedures replace anterior or posterior layers while preserving unaffected tissue. The technique is selected according to the diseased layer.
Recovery and Follow-up
Visual recovery is gradual and differs by technique. Medication and regular controls are essential for wound healing, pressure monitoring and early recognition of rejection or infection.
